There are many instances when homeowners choose not to get started with backyard composting because of the perception that it is hard to do correctly. In reality, you just need to collect the basic organic materials, find a place for the compost heap and then allow nature to take over the task. There are, however, some simple principles to keep in mind that will help you enjoy good results.

There are a number of different types of compost bins on the market that you can use to help manage and contain your compost. But, a special bin is not a requirement that is needed to accomplish successful composting, but more of a convenience. It is easy enough to build your own bin for your compost pile and simply cover it over with a sheet of polythene or chunk of cardboard.

compost pile
However, if you prefer to have the composter looking neater and being easier to handle, then it is a good idea to look into compost bins. These bins are available at most garden centers, at online stores that feature organic gardening products and many local recycling departments will provide them for you free or at low cost.

Making a compost is as simple as adding your organic items that are compostable on a regular basis. Any waste product that was at one time a living thing will compost, or decompose, but some items are not recommended to be thrown into your compost pile. Meats, dairy foods and cooked foods will end up attracting pests and vermin so these should not be used in your home compost bins efforts.

composting
Dead and decaying leaves, lawn clippings, manure, and kitchen waste such as rinds, peelings, coffee grounds and even eggshells can be added to the compost. Older, thicker and tougher plant materials are slower to decompose but they benefit the compost by providing more substance, or body, to the finished compost product. These heavier green waste materials usually comprise most of a compost pile.

Wood items take a long time to decompose. Whenever possible it is best to shred, chip or chop wood materials to help accelerate the rotting process. However, as long as they are mixed in with other materials that decompose faster they will still provide some benefit to the process overall.

yard waste
In general it is best to have fairly equal amounts of what is called brown material and green material in your compost. Brown materials are the manures, dead leaves, small twigs and cardboard and newspapers. Green materials include hedge and grass clippings, coffee grounds, fruit rinds and uncooked vegetables.

You can start your compost heap with as little as a foot of compostable materials. When you feel you have collected almost enough to get started, you can simply mow the lawn or get busy pulling weeds from the garden, toss in some of your kitchen waste and newspaper, and maybe add a little straw to provide enough material.

Turn the pile occasionally and let nature takes its course and soon you will have some rich compost to add to your vegetable garden.

If you have animals, particularly horses or ponies, then you should be aware of the risks of ragwort. This dangerous weed is specially toxic to horses and ponies, and also other animals, and once this nuisance weed has become established, it can be extremely hard to get rid of. In truth, even just one ragwort plant can produce as many as 150,000 seeds, 60-80% of which will germinate if the seeds find appropriate soil. More importantly, you might not be aware that you have this problem weed growing on your land as the seeds are able to lie domant for as long as twenty years.

On more weed that is particularly dangerous is japanese knotweed, which can spread amazingly fast and has roots that are able to break through masonry. The strange, and ludicrous, thing about this dangerous weed, is that it can be eaten – apparently having a taste not unlike rhubarb. Still, it is a problematic weed that needs handling as an industrial waste, as just one small piece of the tuberous root can engender a whole new plant.

Knotweed also has other uses, for example, it is a great source of resveratrol, (a standard nutritional supplement, which is theorized to improve longevity), and an first-rate source of emodin (also commonly in use as a nutritional supplement to help regulate bowel movements).

If you spot one of these nasty weeds on your property, you should act quickly, and are well advised to consult experts in the field of weed control before the trouble becomes unmanageable.

In order to ease the problems of overflowing landfills, more and more cities and towns around the country are opening up recycling centers which allows people to drop off their yard waste. This waste is then used for large-scale composting projects.

In some areas, the resulting compost is used to fertilize public parks and other public facilities and in some municipalities, the composts are made available to citizens for home fertilizer usage.

yard waste
This use of yard waste on a municipal level has helped to reduce the burden on the landfills, while making people more aware of the importance of organic waste recycling and of the benefits of compost bins .

At the same time, the parks and recreational departments are able to cut their budgets for fertilizer and soil treatments by utilizing the compost to treat and improve the soil in the parks. Some cities also use the compost to support the community vegetable garden projects as well.

The most commonly used raw materials that are used for these composting projects are the abundant yard waste materials such as fallen leaves, grass clippings, hedge and shrub trimmings, and small-size, pruned tree branches. Larger branches and trees can also be run through a chipper and the mulch can be added to the compost, as well as the many Christmas trees that are chipped and shredded each year.

Of course, individual households can easily compost their yard debris as well, without needing to either wait for the pick-up schedule or for their municipality to institute such a program.

compost bins
Backyard composting is quite simple to start and there are compost bins available on the market for those with small or large backyards. Even those who live in apartments can enjoy the benefits of recycling their organic kitchen waste.

In fact, home composting can be a better solution. This is because most municipalities exclude certain organic waste products from the public composting piles that can readily be added to your composting project.

For instance, at home you can include newspaper, coffee grounds, crushed eggshells, fruit rinds and vegetable peels. Most of the time you cannot include any of these items with your yard waste for curbside pickup.

With backyard composting, you can include all of these items right alongside of your yard waste and debris and throw it all right on your compost heap . However, you should never include animal meat, bones, pet feces, or any dairy products. These waste items will simply attract vermin and pests to your backyard and interfere with the decomposition process.

composts
Some municipalities have enjoyed a 20% decrease in the volume of material going into their landfills by recycling yard waste. This small action is extending the capacity of the landfills and giving the decision makers a chance to come up with additional solutions to their landfill problems.

Homeowners can do their part in helping by either separating their green waste for pickup or by starting their own compost heap.

If you want products that accelerate growth, protect crops, save money, and increase harvest size and profitability, you need Advanced nutrient.

Our products and our company have been featured in leading magazines.

If you’re using fertilizers made by other companies, you’re losing yield and wasting money.

Why? Because their products weren’t designed for the crops you grow.

We’ve got a team of top scientists working night and day to make products that will make your grow room produce more and more for you.

The crops you grow have special needs that only we have discovered through rigorous testing. And we’ve designed products that give your crops exactly what they need when they need it.

No other company works as hard for you as we do.

Most companies use the cheapest materials and processes possible, and they spend hardly any money on product upgrades via research and development.

Advanced nutrient is the opposite of that. We use the best source materials and manufacturing processes, which means you get stronger products that work better, cost less, last longer and produce fantastic results.

Your crops will grow faster, flower faster, and yield more- if you use Advanced Nutrients.

We constantly upgrade our products whenever our team of scientists and testers discovers new information or materials that will make the products more beneficial for your plants.

You’ll always get the most easily-absorbed, properly-configured, quality controlled, potent products when you get Advanced Nutrients.

So how did Advanced Nutrients get where it is today?

A decade ago, three businessmen decided to revolutionize the plant nutrients and hydroponics industry.

The trio- Michael Straumietis, Robert Higgins, and Eugene Yordanov- already had extensive combined experience in business, marketing, horticulture, and engineering when they founded Canadian Soiless Ltd in 1996.

In their personal lives, the men have courageous achievements that make them optimally primed for creating new styles of business success. Higgins, for example, has long been a competitive athlete in extreme sports such as ski jumping and motorcycle racing.

From childhood on, all three partners have been lauded for their strength, adventurousness, and progressive thinking. Courage, strength and new thinking was needed to bring new blood and better products into the hydroponics industry because growers were getting the same yields per light year after year.

After its founding, Canadian Soiless was at first a retailer-wholesaler of equipment and nutrients made by other manufacturers. As the partners listened to customer feedback and researched the products they were selling, they realized these products were not specifically or properly engineered for the high-value crops grown by their customers.

So, in 1998, they founded Polar Bear Manufacturing Ltd., a company that makes innovative, professional equipment such as heat exchangers, fans, blowers, C02 dispensers, and climate monitoring systems.

In 1999, Polar Bear Manufacturing became worldwide distributors of high-intensity lighting systems made by Bell Lighting Technologies. Canadian Soiless and Polar Bear became hydroponics equipment industry leaders.

The founders expanded their research, development and marketing after they discovered that fertilizers sold by other companies failed to maximize the profit potential of high-level hydroponics gardens.

They discovered that most fertilizers lacked correct levels, ratios, and types of quality components most useful for hydroponics plants.

After two years of field testing conducted by a team of five Ph.D’s, the trio unveiled a startling new line of products specifically engineered for hydroponics magazines hydrophonics, which differs from soil growing in many key ways.

These products, sold under the now-famous Advanced Nutrients logo, embody a comprehensive approach to hydroponics growing.

They contain proprietary blends of quality micro and macro nutrients, amino acids, hormones, expensive chelates, plant growth regulators, vitamins, enzymes, yeast, yeast extracts, organics, carbohydrates, microbes, beneficial bacteria and beneficial fungi.

Some products are almost totally organic, while others are synthetic-organic mixes. The company created dozens of powerful growing formulas, including the SensiPro Two Plus program, which features micro-adjusted week-by-week formulations designed to satisfy plant’s changing needs during flowering and ripening.

The company just released a specialty fertilizer called Monkey Juice that maximizes the potential of coco coir root zone media while fixing problems caused by coco coir and inferior fertilizers.

It’s also created a premium two-part bloom fertilizer called Connoisseur, which uses proprietary materials to push plants to the highest yields ever seen.

For growers who want the tastiest, best-smelling crops ever, Advanced offers Sweet Leaf, which increases growth rate while sugaring crops so that harvests are have delicious bouquet and taste.

And all Advanced Nutrients products are backed by an unprecedented 100% guarantee. The guarantee means growers can buy and use the products with assurance that you are getting the best for your precious crops.

Nobody else offers a guarantee like we do, because nobody else tests, designs and manufactures specifically for hydroponics gardening needs.

Ongoing plant-specific testing proves that Advanced Nutrients products greatly increase vigor, maturation speed, yield and potency. Our products are engineered nutrition programs, soil treatments, root zone additives, foliar sprays, preventives, inoculants, compost teas, bud boosters, and other highly-effective specialty formulas that help growers create strong plants that are protected against pests and diseases that plague growers.

All the company’s products are manufactured using the best ingredients, strict quality controls, and automated safeguards, and are backed by the company’s unparalleled 100% performance guarantee.

Advanced Nutrients products are superior to all other products they compete with.

In an innovative test conducted in 2003, a grower compared Advanced Nutrients to fertilizers made by five other leading nutrients companies in a side by side grow room comparison on identical clones taken from the same mother plant.

Advanced Nutrients’ plants substantially outperformed other plants.

We’ve been endorsed by thousands of professional and amateur growers around the world. Advanced Nutrients products have been favorably reviewed and featured in the world’s leading hydroponics magazines.

Internet grow forums often feature reports from excited growers bragging about their mega yield success using Advanced Nutrients.

Advanced Nutrients is dedicated to its retailers, its customers and to plants. Demand for Advanced Nutrients is skyrocketing worldwide; the company’s products are now available across North America, and in Australia, the United Kingdom, Holland, Germany, and Spain.

Our website is constantly being upgraded and improved so you get the latest information, customer support, free newsletters, and online ordering.

We make it easy for you to improve your garden immediately by giving you the best information available anywhere.

Beautiful Landscaping: Planning is the Key

So you want to create a fascinating landscape garden around your home? It may sound so easy, but it’s not. Putting your dream garden into reality always require proper landscaping planning so you won’t end up delaying its execution because of increased cost and other problems.

Landscaping Tips

Even if you will to do the task yourself, you still need to plan everything from day one. Careful planning results to a well-designed landscape that will surely bring pleasure to your family and will increase the value of your property. Remember: it isn’t just about placing trees and plants around your home. It is rather an art involving conscious organization of your outdoor space to make it not just pleasing to the eyes but a truly enjoyable place to stay in.

Backyard Tombstone Landscaping

Set your goals

An American like you will surely spend big bucks for their home and building landscaping. To avoid putting much of that money to waste, you should set a goal and focus on realizing that. Also, you must understand not just how but why you landscape. Among the main goals of landscaping are:

• To develop and organize the area around your home for maximum use and human satisfaction

• To create a harmonious visual relationship between your house and the yard.

• To minimize landscape maintenance to a more practical level.

Garden Advice

Create a Landscape Design

So you goal has been set. The next thing you must do is to create the landscape design you want for your yard. This process can be way too easy if you have landscaping software. Nevertheless, you can use a piece of paper and colored pencils to begin sketching and designing your landscape. Here’s how:

• Create a simple, scaled drawing of the site. Sketch its utilities, walks, and driveways and note where paved surfaces are. Then, point out the areas where flower beds, patios, vegetable garden and play areas will be situated.

• By drawing arrows, indicate sun angles as well as prevailing winds for winter and summer. Make sure to circle the place in your yard that need wind protection or shade.

• Highlight areas where landscaping height or width is restricted. Also, emphasize the place where drainage is poor and the areas with standing water. Note also the trees and shrubs already existing in your yard.

While sketching your landscape design, consider the needs and habits of your family. Make a design that best satisfies not just their needs but their hearts’ desire. Discuss with your family the things they want to incorporate and prioritize the most important aspects.

Survey available Materials

Once you’ve come up with a fascinating design, what you need to do next is to review the materials needed and find out how much the whole project will cost. List down the price of all the materials you need to complete the project. These include benches, plants, rocks, the bricks and many more. Also, include in your computation the labor cost. When you already know how much you need to spend for your home landscaping, you can now decide when to push through with the project.

Those are the basic steps involved in every landscaping planning. So if you want a home that’s beautiful in and out, give it a good interior design matched with an attractive landscape. And in every landscaping project bear in mind that proper planning is the key.

For my whole life I’ve loved being in the garden. When I was a small child I would spend countless hours in the dirt with my grandmother planting everything from cucumbers to corn. Every summer I would spend all my days on my grandparents farm. My grandfather game me a proposal, work in the garden or study American history. Of course it was an easy choice since I loved gardening and hated school.

So that leads me to where I am today, still spending all summer in the garden, just now it is my backyard instead of the farm. This year I decided that I’d mix up the vegetables I planted. I began with tomatoes, then moved onto beans and broccoli. That was the easy part. I had to water them almost every day since this summer was so dry. I needed to get my man to chop down an intruding tree that was depriving my garden of the sun. So basically it was a lot of work to get those veggies.

Getting rid of weeds it the most boring part of gardening. This year I didn’t have as many problems because I chose to go out and cheap garden shovels. Having to move around on my knees all summer was not fun at all. In the coming years I think I might get someone to come to my house and weed my garden once a week. All I need to do now is get my husband to pay for it.

Gardening tools make a big difference so I don’t know why people aren’t keener to buy garden tools. If it were up to me there would be no room left in my garage because I’d have a tool for every little thing. Gardening is great, but having the proper tools for the job makes it way more fun. Next time you are thinking of getting down and dirty, grab the right tool for the job and have fun!

These are my favorite vegetables:

Cucumber

Corn

Cauliflower

Gardening vegetable plants in a container can be a wonderful hobby. With a little patience, a person can produce bountiful harvests from a few growing plants. Everything from cucumbers, eggplants, carrots, and tomatoes can be grown in containers. Gardening vegetable plants is a little different from producing flowers. With the use of a container, a person now has the option to grow organic food right at their own back door.

The container that will be chosen depends strictly on what planter garden plants will be chosen. If tomatoes are the plant, then a perfect way to purchase them would be to find wholesale garden plants. This way many can be bought at once. When selecting a pot, make sure that it is large enough for the plant to grow tall.

planter garden
Also, gardening vegetable plants like tomatoes requires a metal cage to contain the tomato plant. Otherwise, it will be weighted down when it begins to bear fruit. If root crops such as carrots are to be grown, one must be sure to buy a container that is deep enough. A local nursery should be able to help with container gardening ideas for gardening vegetable plants such as carrots.

Another thing to consider when gardening vegetable plants in container gardening ideas is what type of potting mix one will use. The main thing to remember here is to make sure that whatever soil is chosen that it drains well. When dealing with a raised box garden, one must remember that it will dry out faster than a field vegetable would.

raised box garden
By choosing a good potting mix in the beginning, gardening vegetable plants will be easier because the soil will more than likely hold water better. A good way to help this is by putting a thin layer of gravel on the bottom of the container. This will help any drainage issues and will also ensure that root rot is kept at bay.

Gardening vegetable plants in a container can be a great thing for people who have small spaces yet still want to have a garden. No longer is a large plot of land needed to grow crops such as tomatoes, carrots, and eggplant.

box garden planter
Anyone with a small space can grow these edible plants quickly and easily in containers if they just take the time to learn all there is to know about gardening vegetable plants in a container. The rewards of a vegetable garden can make a person’s mouth salivate at just the thought of all those vegetables.

Whether you manage the public walkways of a university campus, or simply your one-car driveway and fifty feet of sidewalk, you need to be concerned about ice buildup during the winter.
When purchasing an ice melting product, it is important to understand that not all are created equal. Each has pros and cons associated with them. Here are the main ingredients that go into the most common ice-melting products available to consumers and property managers.

Sodium chloride, also know as “rock salt” is the most commonly applied ice melt. But it has a limited effectiveness in extreme cold and won’t melt ice when temperatures fall much below 15 degrees. The good news is that rock salt doesn’t necessarily harm concrete surfaces, but it is corrosive to metals like steel. Another big drawback with rock salt is that it causes damage to lawns and landscapes.
Rock salt is used mostly by townships and municipalities when they “salt” the roads because it delivers fair results and is less expensive.

Calcium chloride is another popular ice melting combination and can melt ice down to 25 degrees below freezing. Where I live, we need that lower temperature melting power! The cost of Calcium Chloride ice melters is usually a little more than rock salt, but the advantages are worth the extra pennies.
Calcium Chloride is also less harmful to vegetation when used in accordance with labeling on the bag or bucket. Some people would call it safe paw ice melt

Magnesium chloride is very much similar to calcium chloride. It is considered less corrosive, safer for use on concrete and less damaging to plants. It delivers similar results in similar temperatures.

Potassium chloride and urea. These are mixtures commonly found in fertilizers, but that does not mean they are safe around vegetation. Keep in mind that any ice melting product you use must be applied at rates recommended on the labeling. Are you seeing the trend here? STICK TO THE LABEL!!
Since urea alone does not contain chlorides, it is less corrosive to metals and better to use on concrete containing rebar and around steel structures.
The drawback to urea is that it does not melt ice as well as other alternatives.

Ice melting products may also contain sand or clay additives to help with traction. I’ve even seen municipalities use “cinders” to spread on roads as a way to improve traction.

So How Do Ice Melters Work?

All deicers basically work the same, but bring differing results at lower temps. Ice Melters must reach the pavement or concrete to become completely effective. Once on the pavement they begin to separate the ice from the concrete at which time air and water flow beneath it, generating heat to melt away the rest. In addition, as the ice is loosened, it can be shoveled away easier.

Ice melting products work best if applied before snow or ice accumulates. This way, ice can never bond to the concrete. Spread the ice melt thinly over the surface, following the label directions.
In general calcium chloride and sodium chloride rank the highest in effectiveness based on speed and at the lowest temperatures.

The best time to buy your driveway deicer is now!

Looking for the garden supplies you may need for your garden is often difficult especially if you need garden equipment and supplies in large quantities. Looking for supplies in bulk will require you to go directly to a garden supply company, as this gives you the opportunity for getting the best deals. Purchasing directly from a garden supply company allows you to save a considerable sum of money as the retail mark-ups are in essence eliminated.

You may not need to go to a garden supply company if your needs are not of course in bulk, however if you need to buy the same types of garden supplies continuously throughout the season then buying through a garden supply company will definitely allow you to save a lot. By buying your garden supplies through this method your costs will be considerably cut compared to buying your garden tools piece by piece, even if does take more than one season for you to use up all your supplies, as the the money you save could be used for other garden items that you may need but have not budgeted for.

Finding The Right Places To Shop With

There are many things that you have to consider when you are looking for the ideal garden supply company which will supply your gardening needs. Ideally the garden supply company should be local, as this allows you to personally go out and see all the items with ease and not have the inconvenience of travelling far. Having a local garden supply company is certainly the most ideal, however if there isn’t one in your area then there are still options available for you to take advantage of.

There are going to be a garden supply company or two that you can find through the listings of your phone book or through the Internet that you can shop with online. You can always have their items shipped directly to you, which can be a great help and a nice convenience for you. Finding the perfect garden supply company for you may take a little time and research but it will be completely worth it in the end and you will see it with the money you end up saving.

If you have visited to the doctor, the prospects are he or she has told you to watch what you eat. If you have been consuming sufficient amount of wholesome foods such as fish, meat, fruits and vegetables, then fret not. Because some of these contain harmful compounds, perhaps you should start switching to organically raised vegetables and other food products. Basically, the mainstream of these organic vegetables and other food products have been genetically changed making it a smart choice for buyers. For the grounds of improved production and profit, some farmers may tend to engage in some various techniques which may include the use of chemicals and fertilisers to make them look and feel bigger even if they are aware that this can be harmful to your health. No tricks or anything fancy is used to make organically grown crops – you only require rich soil, sunlight, water and some fertiliser to make it work.

Garden Tools

It has been noted from a study that eating organic foods and vegetables on a daily basis can help you attain a heartier life as fifty percent more vitamins and minerals can be added to vegetables and other products which have been organically produced compared to those made from conventional methods. You will probably feel like you will live longer too as organically raised vegetables taste much better. This is because although fertilisers and pesticides have their benefits, they remove essential vitamins and nutrients so you are not getting the required daily allowance that your body requires. Another benefit of consuming organic vegetables and food is that you help the surroundings which happens because farmers are no more using damaging chemicals and put these into the ground. The land which they have cultivated on can be planted by the next generation because the land that has been educated for so long, is still productive.

Garden Design

It can be noticeable from the supermarket that the cost of conventionally grown products is cheaper than that of those organically raised vegetables and other items. Your life is one valuable treasure and something that you should take care of, so budgeting yourself towards consuming the best foods can just block you from getting the quality of life that we all want and need. Sure enough, you won’t want to delay until someone you know gets sick so think about the future and go organic.

If most farmers decide to produce more organic vegetables and other items and sell these to supermarkets, then sooner or later, its prices will go down. It is only because there is a tiny department of this accessible now in the store but when it grows to be an industry standard, things will alter. If you want to plant and grow these in your backyard while it is not yet widely available, start by looking for its seeds or the fully grown plants and other needed supplies. You can’t assistance these grow by simply sprinkling water every morning because this is just one way of taking good care of them and that’s why it’s needed for you to do some study first so you recognise how to take care of them. Perhaps one of the largest challenges in organic vegetables and food is that the US imports a great many vegetables from countries that are not yet practicing this back to the basics method. For everyone here as well as other nations to enjoy the benefits of organically raised vegetables and fruits – encouragement, proper assistance and introduction should be initiated and pushed to bring it to the surface.
Backyard Garden
